International Workshop

International Workshop “Bits to Bricks: Data, Craft, Code” Completed: Gencay Çubuk served as the general coordinator of the international workshop “Bits to Bricks: Contemporary Approaches in Architectural Design,” featuring speakers affiliated with MIT, UCL, Bartlett, SCI-Arc, Zaha Hadid Architects, Gehry Partners, and ARUP.

The international architectural workshop titled “Bits to Bricks: Data, Craft, Code” was successfully completed, bringing together architects, academics, and students to engage in a critical exploration of contemporary digital design and production practices. Organized by the Faculty of Architecture at Trakya University, the workshop provided an interdisciplinary platform for examining the evolving relationship between data-driven design, computational methodologies, and craft-based architectural thinking.

Throughout the workshop, participants engaged with both theoretical discussions and applied design sessions addressing current transformations in architectural practice. Core themes included parametric and algorithmic design, digital fabrication techniques, data-informed spatial strategies, and the integration of coding and material processes within architectural workflows. These topics were approached not as isolated tools, but as interconnected systems shaping new modes of architectural production.

The program fostered an environment of collaborative learning and experimentation, encouraging participants to critically reflect on how emerging technologies influence architectural authorship, material intelligence, and spatial organization. By combining conceptual lectures with hands-on workshops, the event enabled participants to translate abstract digital logics into tangible design outcomes.

Discussions throughout the workshop emphasized the role of computational tools in redefining relationships between design intent, material behavior, and construction processes. Particular attention was given to the ways in which data and code can operate as generative design agents while remaining grounded in architectural craft and contextual sensitivity.

The successful completion of “Bits to Bricks: Data, Craft, Code” highlighted the importance of research-oriented and technologically informed approaches in contemporary architectural education. The workshop contributed to ongoing discourse on digital transformation in architecture, reinforcing the value of interdisciplinary collaboration and experimental pedagogy in shaping future design practices.

Beyond is immediate educational outcomes, the workshop functioned as a critical research environment in which participants were encouraged to question conventional boundaries between design, computation, and making. The exchange of ideas across different institutional and cultural contexts enabled a comparative reading of digital practices, revealing both shared methodologies and divergent approaches to data, craft, and code. This collective inquiry strengthened the workshop’s role as a platform for knowledge production rather than mere skill acquisition, reinforcing its contribution to the broader discourse on experimental and research-driven architectural education.
